What Or Who Are You Working For

by johnlazy on February 23, 2009

What are you working for? Or who are you working for? Maybe you can say you are working for your family’s welfare, for your brothers and sisters sake, for your own future and many other things so that your status in life will be better. You can also include, helping others aspect so that you can feel better.

But, is there any other reason why you work? You are working to live, to earn, and to bring difference for everyone, is this right? Or you are working because that is the norm of the society and that’s how society works.

I remember in an interview with an actor, he was asked why is he working so hard, what is that for or for whom is he working for? And he said; well that is a tough question, well I can say I am working for my family, my nieces, or for my own future but the truth is I am working because I have to work.

And that struck me; the answer is deeper than what I’ve thought.  The reason for working is that because you have to work. It is like a duty for everybody, if you think about it well you can conclude that way. Maybe that’s already part of human existence to work for survival.

There is a question in my mind; can you really live without working? The working that I’m talking about here is the 8-5 0r 9-6, or working in a business, dealing with a client, the usual work thing to earn a living. So can you live without working?

If you think about it, the people in faraway places where they can’t grasp technology, where they are only relying on their environment for foods and the sort. How different is it? Well you can’t really compare it, you are insane if you really try to compare it but what I’m trying to say is, we are living and working because of the choices we make.

If you are working because of a certain reason, it is really a choice that you have to make. You may not be contented or you maybe contented by the job you have but you have to do it, and that is for to live and survive. People may disagree with the choices you make or you made but they should never question it because it’s a choice you are considerably aware of.

All the reasons, from the deeper sense to plain personal reason, you have to do what you have to do. At the end of the day you are the only one who can answer the entire question about living your life and what makes you happy and that is enough reason to conform all your decision according to the way you want your life to be.

So what or who are you working for? Don’t need to ask, because working alone is enough reason already. Simply do it, if you’ve got passion in your job much better. To live is to work and to work is to live.

Henri-Frédéric Amiel says, “Work while you have the light. You are responsible for the talent that has been entrusted to you.”

And this finds expression through work. Contributions in science through technological innovations and inventions, in literature and in philosophies, practically in all worthwhile human endeavors spring from the dynamism of man’s work.

Even if we come up short of spectacular results from our work, the fact that we become instruments so that our family and children can fully realize their potentialities and dreams, I’d say it’s not all in vain. That’s the prize and its own reward.

Valuable post. Very thought provoking, this.
