It Isn’t Who You Are That Counts, It’s Who You Believe You Are

by johnlazy on January 17, 2009

Having a right mindset and right thought patterns can have a big impact on our behavior. It will teach us to go further than usual and will make us see things clearly.

Self- image can make or break a person’s ability to communicate with people, it can be a hinder for growth or it will help for the person’s self-confidence. That’s why it is important to know our strengths and weaknesses so that we can prepare on how to handle it.

If you really think about it, it isn’t who you are that counts but it’s who you believe you are. It’s how you perceived yourself that matters. You can be as bad as hell but you can always improve yourself, there is always room for improvement, just change your attitude on things.

I remember a story about a car salesman and a hockey player, they both have a scar on their face but they view it differently:

•    A car salesman is partially disfigured in a car accident. Every time he looks in the mirror he thinks people must find him disgusting, because he looks different. His appearance becomes an obsession for him, causing him to lose confidence and become more and more aggressive.

•    Another man acquires a similar scar while playing hockey. Far from finding himself ugly, he feels proud of the disfigurement, considering it a mark of manliness and a source of self-confidence.

As you can see they have different take on the scar on their face. The car salesman has a negative take on it while the hockey player takes it as positive. The important factor is not the scar but the psychological effect the disfigurement has on their face. In other words, it isn’t what people think about you that count, it’s what you think they think.

If you want to go deeper you can assess some people and you’ll be surprised about the result. A person taught to be stupid in his whole life can turn around things by resisting accepting view of the people telling that to him, by doing that he improved himself, then one time people were surprised about his achievements and they really can’t believe it because they know that person is a brainless individual.

So if they tell you, you can’t do it! It is really a waste of time; continue it anyway because if you think you can do it you can really do it. If you are optimistic on your capabilities you can exploit your enormous potential to its fullest. Words, beliefs and mental images are what create us, through the power of mind.

If they think you are not good enough, defy it! Because you know yourself better than what they think you are. Take everything as a challenge and never surrender. Program your mind to think that every negative word is just criticism, so what! You will not die hearing that from them. If the words they are saying is hurting you, smile and walk away.

If you believe you are great, you are really great and so be it.
